Draft Dietary Guidelines kick Aussie farmers in the guts

Australian growers of healthy oils like olive, canola, sunflower and soybean are at a loss to try to understand why the latest government recommendations fail to support an increase in consumption of the healthy oils they produce.

The AOF today issued a Media Release with the aim of drawing attention to the inadequacies of the draft "Dietary Guidelines for Australians" and the related "Guide to Healthy Eating".

The Guidelines fail to actively support increased consumption of healthy vegetable oils in place of less healthy fats and oils, prefering to adopt a recommendation to eat the healthy oils 'sparingly'.

This not only contradicts the latest recommendations in North America in relation to healthy fats, but has also upset Australian farmers who produce the healthy oils.

The AOF has prepared a submission to the review of Dietary Guidelines, expressing concern over the draft recommendations.
