Prospects brighten for 2015 canola harvest
Despite a concerning start to the season, the impact of El Nino has been minimal on this year's canola crop so far.
With the predicted El Niño now well established, and strengthening in recent weeks, the anticipated below average winter rainfall has not eventuated across most of the eastern Australian winter cropping regions. Timely rain in WA over the past 6 weeks has also bolstered crop prospects in that State.
Despite a significant drop in area sown to canola this year, influenced heavily by the prospect of an impending El Nino season, yields at this stage are projected to be average to deliver an annual production tonnage of 3 million tonnes. However, this will be dependent on receiving average rainfall in the coming 6-8 weeks with no significant frost events.
