Volunteer cane plants are emerging; these will be controlled with post-emergent grass herbicide eg Verdict once the majority of the volunteers have germinated and have enough leaf area for effective control. It is likely the block will also need to be sprayed for broadleaf weeds within the next two weeks.

Volunteer cane plants are emerging; these will be controlled with post-emergent grass herbicide eg Verdict once the majority of the volunteers have germinated and have enough leaf area for effective control. Background info = This paddock was prepared using a 'trash conservation' approach where the grower was hoping to maintain as much trash in the soil as possible without detriment to the performance of his soybean crop. The paddock was stool raked (a process whereby the cane trash is moved off the old cane row area into the inter-row) and then the soil was prepared using a zonal tillage implement (which only worked the old cane row area) and a light rotary hoe operation was conducted which aimed to destroy the old cane stool in the row area and incorporate the trash into the inter-row to some degree.
